BOOK REVIEW

I received an unexpected call from a local newspaper editor who asked if i would write a review of the bestseller "The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates." The task was a welcome one as I'd completed several graduate courses in creative writing and the book review offered me a chance to put my expanded skills to good use.

OBITUARY WRITING

I met a challenge when I approached an obits editor at The New York Times to announce the death of an actor based in New York. Before I could complete my sentence, I was asked a barrage of questions about the authenticity of my tip. I answered the questions easily, providing assurance that my story was true. Since I was not an obits writer, I expected someone else to get the story assignment but that's not what happened. I did.
