Dick Beeman, a self-taught realism artist, begins to add color to a sepia-toned portrait that he drew by hand. Beeman says he strives to "portray each subject in their best and most beautiful light." After retiring as a research entomologist at the USDA-ARS, he returned to his talent in portraiture, which he discovered as a 10-year-old boy.

Bug 1: Lily Landing

One day I decided to capture summer bugs in natural scenery. My first photo was a top-down perspective, which is nothing unusual except that I dared to focus my lens over an insect with leaping abilities. I happen to abhor bugs.

Bug 2: Model Wildflower The framing of this plant’s small, rigid blossoms around a soft, delicate-looking wildflower caught my eye. As if modeling, the wildflower’s stark white makes it a standout against the more subdued colors in the background

A bonus came when a flying insect landed in the wildflower and provided a nice focal point.
